NHS pay out £35k to elderly woman for medical negligence

A 102-year-old woman has been awarded medical negligence compensation after being discharged from hospital with a fractured pelvis.

The woman had been admitted to Medway Maritime Hospital in Kent with the fractured pelvis after suffering a fall in February 2007.

She was taken to the hospital but within eight hours she had been discharged and sent home.

Following the incident her condition deteriorated and she was left unable to walk. After two months she was forced to move into a care home.

The daughter of the woman launched a claim for compensation against the NHS on her mother's behalf, arguing that had she received the correct treatment she would still be able to walk and would not have needed to move into a care home.

The woman has since been awarded £35,000 in medical negligence compensation. It is thought that she is the oldest person to receive personal injury compensation from the NHS for mistreatment.
