Doctor's daughter hurt in traffic collisionThe 15-year-old daughter of a doctor who stopped to help victims at an eight-vehicle road traffic accident suffered a serious spinal injury when a Range Rover collided with the rear of her family's Toyota Corolla on the A1. The pediatrician had been on her way home to Durham with her husband and three children after a holiday in Lapland when they came across a vehicle crash, which involved a van, two cars, a people carrier and two Land Rovers near the Angel of the North at Gateshead. Two of the doctor's children escaped unhurt from the smashed car but the teenager had to be cut free by firefighters and was airlifted to Newcastle General Hospital. The road was closed for more than four hours as debris from the vehicle crash was cleared. It is believed icy conditions and poor visibility caused by the glare of the sun led to the road traffic accident.
