Health care worker suffers severe injuries in accident at work

A private health care provider has been fined after an employee slipped and suffered personal injuries in an accident at work.

The woman from Suffolk had been working at the Ipswich hospital when she slipped on a wet floor, which had just been mopped by cleaners.

The health care worker suffered a fractured kneecap in the accident and required surgery. She was later fitted with a leg brace and had to rely on crutches.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that the hospital had failed to carry out adequate risk assessments into cleaning procedures.

The hospital appeared at Ipswich Magistrates' Court where it was fined £5,000 after admitting to a breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act.

An HSE inspector speaking after the hearing commented that the accident at work could have been avoided had the cleaning procedures been properly assessed and planned out.
