No win, no fee lawyer news 25/09/2008
Straw calls solicitor fees "scandalous"Justice Secretary Jack Straw has vowed to act on the "scandalous" fees of some no win, no fee lawyers. He informed the Labour Conference that he is currently debating whether a cap should be introduced on a no win, no fee lawyer's fees. Straw commented on the existing accident compensation system, saying, "I am concerned about 'no win no fee' arrangements. "It's claimed they have provided greater access to justice but the behaviour of some lawyers in ramping up their fees in these cases is nothing short of scandalous. "So I am going to address this and consider whether to cap more tightly the level of success fees that lawyers can charge." However, he did indicate that he would not be replacing the existing no win, no fee lawyer system unless a decidedly better alternative could be found.
