New mesothelioma test welcomed by experts.

The BBC has reported on a new mesothelioma test that is more sensitive than those currently available.

Published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, the Oxford research team's conclusions have shown positive effects of testing for the protein meothelin, a substance closely associated with the industrial disease.

A British Lung Foundation spokesperson welcomed the new treatment, saying, "This study is an important step forward, as it could lead to earlier diagnosis and better treatment of mesothelioma which is vital as currently most patients diagnosed with this disease live less than 12 months."

One researcher indicated that the speed of diagnosis under the new method, and the reduction in invasive procedures, is very good news for those suffering from the asbestos-related lung cancer. It is also likely to benefit those people making personal injury claims over their mesothelioma diagnoses.
