Making roads safe to reduce car accident claims
An Isle of Wight car crash blackspot is getting a safety makeover in a bid to prevent more incidents and their consequent car accident claims.
The Mersley Downs road has seen one death and 12 personal injury accidents in the past three years and the council has now seen fit to carry out road resurfacing and various remedial work on a notorious bend in the Newport to Brading road and at the junction of Lime Kiln Shute.
In a bid to reduce the car accident rate anti-skid surfacing is being laid at both locations and the Lime Kiln junction will also receive measures to improve visibility.
Head of highways Peter Hayward said, "I'm really pleased we are able to make these improvements to this section of road, which has proved difficult for drivers, as the accident record shows.
"It is impossible to make such improvements without causing some disruption but we have been able to schedule these outside of the high tourist season and I am sure the improvements will be welcomed by those who regularly use the road."
It is also hoped that the number of car accident claims made as a result of injuries suffered in these areas will reduce accordingly.
