Witnesses to the scene described seeing the blue Vauxhall Astra Gascoigne was travelling in swerve at high speed around a corner before veering out of control.
The 36-year-old woman driver was questioned on suspicion of drink-driving and was bailed pending further police investigation.
An onlooker said, "There was a massive crash. The car was smoking. Gazza looked really bad – there was blood everywhere."
The ex-Tottenham and Newcastle player was said to be in a "comfortable condition" and his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
