Holiday couple compensated for food poisoning

A couple has been awarded £10,000 in holiday illness compensation after falling seriously ill while on holiday in the Maldives.

The pair had booked a two-week package holiday at a hotel on the exotic resort and looked forward to taking part in activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving. However, soon after arriving they both became violently ill and were diagnosed with salmonella poisoning, usually caught from eating undercooked food.

They became so ill that they spent the majority of the two weeks in their hotel room, only leaving to make visits to the local hospital. The husband reportedly lost one and a half stone in weight as a result of his illness.

The couple launched a claim for compensation against the tour operator claiming that the hotel was unsanitary, it did not have a water supply and had served undercooked food.

They were awarded £10,000 in holiday illness compensation after personal injury solicitors successfully argued that the experience had a negative effect on their lives.
