Car accident sees boxer banned from the road

Popular boxer Amir Khan has been banned from the road for six months after he jumped a red light in his BMW and hit a pedestrian.

The 20-year-old Commonwealth lightweight champion was cleared of dangerous driving at a recent Bolton Crown Court hearing but was convicted of careless driving over the March 2006 car accident.

The court heard how Khan failed to stop at a red light in Bolton town centre and subsequently ploughed into a pedestrian, sending him flying into the air and breaking his leg in several places.

The 55-year-old man who was left injured as a result of the car accident is thought to have employed the services of a personal injury solicitor to help him make a no win, no fee compensation claim against Khan.

Speaking outside court after his sentence was passed, Amir Khan told reporters: "I always said I was careless and I'm sorry it happened. I'll put this behind me and get on with life."
