Symptoms of whiplash injury

Whiplash injury is a very common consequence of car accidents, with thousands of people affected every year. The most obvious indication of whiplash is pain and stiffness of the neck, but there are other symptoms that anyone who suspects they may have suffered such an injury should look out for. These include:

  • Headache
  • Feelings of dizziness
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Problems with balance caused by inner ear disturbance

More serious symptoms to watch for
The good news is that whiplash injury is very rarely serious and does not damage bones, discs or nerves in the neck. However, indications of a more potentially serious injury (although very rare) include:

  • Disturbances of vision
  • Disturbances of hearing
  • Hoarseness and difficulty swallowing
  • Weakness and heaviness in the arms
  • Pins and needles on the inner sides of the hand

It’s very important that, if you’re involved in a car accident and have ANY of the symptoms listed above, you seek medical advice as soon as possible.
