Pleural plaques information and advice
Pleural plaques is the most common disease caused by exposure to asbestos and can occur after a latent period of approximately 20-40 years.
They are smooth, white, raised irregular areas of fibrous collagen tissue that develop on the pleura (lining of the lungs) and often become calcified. The size of pleural plaques varies from small to large, and are usually found by chance on a chest x-ray.
Symptoms
Although in themselves pleural plaques are not thought to cause any physical symptoms, their presence can cause apprehension and lead to future illnesses.
Recent High Court ruling
The High Court has recently ruled that thousands of people with pleural plaques are entitled to compensation. Although generally pleural plaques don’t impair lung function, exposure to asbestos and the development of pleural plaques can cause anxiety and the risk of future asbestos-related diseases.
