What does “personal injury” mean?

The term “personal injury” is a broad one, and covers all manner of injuries and wounds sustained by people in a very diverse range of circumstances. People are hurt in lots of different ways and situations but the three following categories are the most common:

Car accident
Personal injury following a car accident is very common, despite the great improvements in car safety that have been seen in recent years. Whiplash is the most widely seen injury, but serious traumatic incidents resulting in brain damage and spinal cord injury are still relatively frequent events.

Accidents in the workplace
Health and safety regulations in this country are very strict, and all employers are legally obliged to ensure the safety of their workers as much as they can. However, with many people working with heavy machinery and in busy environments, accidents do happen, sometimes with very serious effects. And all employers must hold Employers Liability Insurance to cover against anyone suffering a personal injury on their premises.

Accidents in a public place
Again, it is the legal responsibility of shopkeepers, business-owners and local authorities to ensure that their premises are safe and do not cause harm to members of the public. For example, anyone who slips and trips in a supermarket in circumstances that should and could have been avoided (perhaps by cleaning up spilt goods) is able to make a claim against the proprietors for compensation. And an uneven and dangerous pavement could result in a personal injury claim against the local council.
