Different types of mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer, with approximately 2 to 3 thousand cases diagnosed each year. Mesothelioma usually occurs in men who have been exposed to asbestos at work or home. There are the three main types of mesothelioma:

  1. Pleural mesothelioma
This is a cancer of the cells that make up the pleura (linings around the outside of the lungs and inside of the ribs) and chest cavity. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, pain in the chest, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, coughing up of blood or pain in the lower back.

  2. Peritoneal mesothelioma
This type of mesothelioma involves the abdominal cavity together with the liver, spleen and the bowel. Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, swollen feet and fever.

  3. Pericardial mesothelioma
Individuals with pericardial mesothelioma have cancerous growths in tissues surrounding the heart. The initial symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma include chest pain, dyspnea, cough, and palpitations.

Mesothelioma survival rate
The survival rate of people with mesothelioma is very low. The average survival chance is about 17 months from the beginning of the symptoms. The 3-year survival chance is 10 percent and 5-year survival chance is about 5 percent.
