Asbestos removal
Asbestos was used extensively as a building
material in the UK from the 1950s through to the mid 1980s.
Although there has been extensive asbestos
removal over the years, there is still a large percentage
present in buildings. It is estimated that over half a million
non-domestic premises currently have some form of asbestos
in them.
The health hazards of asbestos removal mean that it must be done by a specialist contractor (see The Asbestos Removal Contractors Association - www.arcaweb.org.uk).
Asbestos removal - methods used:
- Dry stripping
This is the most common method but removing asbestos in a dry state without using any water will produce higher dust levels than other asbestos removal methods
- Controlled wet stripping
This is a popular method for asbestos removal. However, if there is electrical equipment near the asbestos, a dry technique is preferred
- High pressure water jetting
A specialised and potentially highly dangerous process usually used in large scale asbestos removal operations where access is difficult
- Air management for hot stripping
This method can be used for hot stripping and comprises a high velocity air flow, which directs the fibres released during cutting to a filtered exhaust at the end of a specially designed enclosure
