Asbestos and people at risk
Asbestos was known as the ‘magic material’ as it combined the durability of rock with the suppleness of silk. This allowed it to be used for many industrial purposes.
However, asbestos fibres are the smallest natural fibres known, and if asbestos material is disturbed they release these asbestos fibres which can be inhaled into the lungs. Once in the lungs they can remain there for many years and it is often the case that asbestos related respiratory diseases do not manifest until many years later.
People most likely to be exposed to asbestos are males working as:
- Metal plate workers
- Vehicle body builders
- Plumbers and gas fitters
- Sheet metal workers
- Electrical plant operators
- Production fitters
- Construction workers
- Electrical engineers
These occupations are generally linked with three broad areas of asbestos use:
- Railway building

What measures have been taken to reduce the risk?
Much has been done to control the risk of asbestos under the Asbestos (Prohibition) Regulations. Due to the large number of people working in high risk occupations, there was a revision in 2002 of the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations. This introduced a duty on those responsible for commercial premises to manage the asbestos contained in them.
